The huge abattoir on the banks of the Tiber at Testaccio was constructed between 1888 and 1890. It closed in 1975. Part of the complex has been redeveloped as a branch of the Rome Museum of Contemporary Art ( MACRO ).
The green hill on the right is Monte Testaccio, a 35m high mound consisting almost entirely of sherds of broken amphorae - pottery vessels used in the transportation of olive oil from Spain and North Africa to Ancient Rome.
