In the late 16th century a church here was associated with a nearby asylum for the insane. When the asylum was moved in the 1720s the site was redeveloped as the Collegio dei Bergamaschi, an institution operated for the benefit of the inhabitants of the northern town of Bergamo resident in Rome. The church was rebuilt and dedicated to Saint Bartholmew the Apostle, and Alexander, the patron saint of Bergamo. There have been several restorations - that of the façade was completed in 2006.  On the south side of Piazza Colonna, opposite the Palazzo Chigi.
