The original basilica was built by Pope Sixtus III in the 5th century. Much of the original structure survives, although over the centuries successive Popes have altered and added to the building, with the main façade by Ferdinando Fuga for Benedict XIV being constructed in the mid-18th century. The basilica is notable for its magnificent 5th century mosaics.
This view, to the north-east along Via Paolina, offers a glimpse of that part of the structure which houses the Pauline, or Borghese Chapel, commissioned by Pope Paul V Borghese in the early 17th century.
