The hamlet of Poltesco is situated near the village of Ruan Minor, on the Lizard Peninsula. Close by is Carleon Cove, for several centuries a base for the processing of locally caught pilchards. By the mid-19th century this activity had moved to nearby Cadgwith. The round building seen here housed a capstan, used to draw fishing boats on to the shore.
From the mid-1850s the Lizard Serpentine Company established workshops here for the manufacture of artefacts made from serpentine stone. The business closed in 1893. The warehouse of 1866 survives.
